According to a report on the Cryptozoology News website, a man had an amazing encounter in the woods of Wisconsin in August, 2013. If his story is true, he is one of the few people to ever witness a werewolf transformation and live to tell about it. The man, an outdoorsman who gave his name simply as Richard, lives in the town of Almon. It was during one trip to the woods near his home when he had his strange encounter.
Richard is a self-professed fan of botany and, at the time of the sighting, was out in the woods collecting plants for his studies. Although he’s retired and doesn’t have any formal qualifications, he views himself as a man of science, always searching for logical explanations to life’s mysteries.
He left home around 5am with his backpack of supplies, his shotgun and his skepticism, firmly intact.
After a few hours, Richard had collected all the specimens he needed but realised he’d forgotten to bring something to drink. Thirsty, he headed to a nearby spring where he knew he’d find clean water. When he arrived, he placed his backpack on the ground and quenched his thirst. On his way back to the spot where he left his gear, he heard a strange noise that reminded him of a howl but sounded as if someone was trying to vocalize words. After listening a few moments, he heard nothing else and headed home.
As he walked along the trail, it occurred to Richard that maybe he’d misinterpreted the sound. Perhaps the noise had been a person who was in pain and needed help. Worried, he returned to the spring, concerned that someone could be seriously injured.
Once back at the spring, Richard listened intently for the sound. Not hearing anything, he called out to see if anyone would reply. Hearing no reply, he sat by the spring and ate his lunch, relieved it had been a false alarm.
Abruptly the howl bellowed out from the woods only this time it sounded more human, like a man calling out. Richard felt the hairs on his neck instinctively rise but still he couldn’t see anything. Then, out of nowhere, he saw a figure best described as man-like but was honestly nothing he had seen before. The man, or creature, stood on its hind legs and, at first, its skin was almost completely hairless, like a human. As Richard watched, silvery hair sprouted from within the creature and covered its body. The shape of its skull changed, wolf-life ears grew out the sides, and its face stretched out into a long snout. Long, sharp teeth grew down the sides of its face and its eyes became dark.
The werewolf spotted Richard and issued a low growl.
Richard, understandably terrified, realised he had left his shotgun beside the spring and was defenceless. He hesitated to run for fear his flight would stir the werewolf into pursuit so he stood quietly, avoiding its eyes as one would an aggressive dog. The werewolf approached and sniffed him, even meeting his gaze. He sensed the werewolf was in pain and angry. Terrified at its proximity, Richard screamed helplessly. This startled the lycan and it disappeared into the woods.
Wildlife experts and sceptics argue that supernatural reports of this nature, when investigated, often turn out to involve normal animals with some type of skin disease. However, the details of Richard’s account set his story apart from someone spotting a mangy wolf in the distance. If his story is true, Richard is one of but a handful of people to encounter a werewolf, alone in the woods no less, and not end up on the missing persons report.
