The deer were an ordinary road hazard. What followed them was harder to place.
An anonymous driver’s Osage County, Kansas account describes a journey home near sunset in summer 2016. Deer crossed ahead of the car; another animal came after them, clearing the road and disappearing over an embankment.
The witness describes a gray, short-coated animal about the deer’s height, broad through the chest and thin behind. Its muzzle seemed unusually short, its ears pointed, and its gait disturbingly like a person attempting to run on all fours. The brief crossing left enough detail to trouble her, but not enough to identify it.
There is no moment in this account when the animal rises into an upright figure. It is a quadruped throughout the observation. The narrator later found dogman stories the closest match she knew, while expressly remaining unsure of the label.
The animal that would not fit
Roadside encounters can turn on a few seconds between one treeline and the next. Here, the familiar deer make the following shape seem stranger: the driver has just recognized one kind of animal moving across the road, then sees another whose proportions and movement resist the same quick recognition.
Her account does not settle what followed the deer. It preserves the difficulty of naming it — and the driver’s refusal to turn the nearest available name into certainty.
