Among the films announced for imagineNATIVE’s 2016 program was a title with an old, unsettling name: Loup Garou — Werewolf.
The September 8 festival announcement credited Matthew Vachon as director. Wapikoni lists the work in its 2016 collection, and cinematographer Clark Ferguson’s portfolio identifies it as a music video produced by Wapikoni Mobile.
Those credits place the work within a particular filmmaking network. Wapikoni’s mobile-studio model supports filmmaking in Indigenous communities; imagineNATIVE brings Indigenous screen and media work into a festival setting. A music video bearing the name Loup Garou joined that 2016 selection.
The title alone cannot tell us how Vachon uses the figure, or which meanings an audience should bring to it. What it does offer is an invitation to approach the werewolf through a different form: not a reported animal at the edge of a road, but a short screen work selected to be seen and heard.
