Mysteries of Hawaii: Native Hawaiian-owned walks that beat the mainland hype machine

Honolulu’s Mysteries of Hawaii took the 2025 national ghost-tour crown. USA TODAY flags it as the only Native Hawaiian-owned ghost tour company in the state — Ghosts of Old Honolulu, Waikiki / Night Marchers themes, education-first framing. If your 2014 mental map of “best ghost tour” stopped at the French Quarter, update the atlas. The Pacific won a readers’ poll.

Multi-city machines: Ghost City Tours & American Ghost Walks

Ghost City Tours — Savannah origin story, then New Orleans, Gettysburg, Nashville, Austin, Salem, Key West, and expanding. Walking tours + haunted pub crawls. Volume brand with review-count flex. Pick the city; pick the maturity rating; tip the guide.

American Ghost Walks — research-forward walks across 10+ destinations (Madison roots; Milwaukee, Portland ME, Chicago coach tours, Stillwater, Puerto Rico products, etc.). Sells “true history is scarier than a script” energy. Good for enthusiasts who want footnotes with their fog.

Neither company is Zak Bagans. Both will sell you a night walk.

Stanley Hotel Ghost Tours: Rocky Mountain residual celebrity

Estes Park still packages Ghosts and History / night tours with Room 217 lore and corridor folklore (Stanley tour desk). Overnight guests often stack tour + room. Same property as the sleepover package — different product code. The Shining was fiction. The gift shop is very real.

Salem, St. Augustine, Williamsburg, Gettysburg — the colonial death-map circuit

New Orleans: French Quarter walks and gear-forward hunts

The 2014 “depart from the voodoo shop” French Quarter package still has descendants — theatrical walks, LaLaurie lore, cemetery shuttle products. For enthusiasts who want equipment, operators like Gators & Ghosts market small-group paranormal hunts with K2 / REM Pod / SLS-style kits in the Quarter (gatorsandghosts.com). That is closer to “investigation lite” than a joke jump-scare walk — still a ticketed show with a guide, not a scientific grant.

Hands-on West Coast: Hollywood EMF nights

The Haunt (Los Angeles) sells Hollywood / Chinatown ghost-hunting walks with EMF meters and spirit-box optional play (thehauntghosttours.com). Meet near the Roosevelt lore corridor. Believers and skeptics both pay the same price. Only one group goes home sure.

Holdovers and honorable screams from the 2014 map

• Gatlinburg / Chattanooga ghost walks — Smokies folklore + cemetery starts; TripAdvisor-era excellence claims from 2013 are nostalgia, so re-check current ratings and schedules.

Nationalized brands (Ghost City, American Ghost Walks, US Ghost Adventures tour company) ate a lot of local-only mindshare. Mysteries of Hawaii crashed the “best tour” conversation from the Pacific. Salem/St. Augustine/Williamsburg/Gettysburg remain death-tourism capitals. Stanley still sells corridor myth. We explicitly firewall the TV title from the tour SERP. Gear-forward hunts (NOLA, Hollywood) grew as upsells to classic storytelling walks.

Bottom line

If your goal is a 2026 paranormal night out, buy a licensed walking tour in a city that already sells darkness as heritage. Use USA TODAY 10Best as a popularity radar. Use operator sites for meeting points and age rules. Leave the lock-down cosplay to people with production insurance.
