The smell arrived before the movement among the gravestones.

In a June 30, 2025 article for IBTimes UK, Ria Pathak recounts a retired couple’s alleged encounter at Cannock Chase on July 18, 2024. The account places their evening walk near Pye Green water tower and the German Military Cemetery. After noticing an unpleasant odor, they reportedly saw something moving nearby.

The husband’s description was of a very broad, hairy figure, estimated at eight feet tall, standing upright. He said it faced them with large yellow eyes, howled and jumped a fence before disappearing into the trees.

The report attributes the subsequent interview to paranormal writer Lee Brickley. The husband spoke; his wife reportedly declined. It is his account, carried through an investigator and a later news report, rather than two published witness interviews.

IBTimes cites earlier Stoke Sentinel reporting. That underlying page was not accessible for this account, and no photograph of the Cannock encounter is supplied in the readable article. The report’s separate Bridlington photograph claim belongs to different people in a different place.

The cemetery setting gives the encounter a powerful outline, but it cannot identify the figure. What remains is a man’s description of an evening when an unpleasant smell became a face in the trees, and a familiar walking route became somewhere he wanted to leave.
