A film company is asking for werewolf witnesses on Cannock Chase. In the final days of 2016, The National, a Scottish daily, reported that Eleven Films, the makers of the BAFTA-nominated drama The Enfield Haunting, had appealed through the Stoke Sentinel for sightings of the creature said to haunt the forest in Staffordshire.
What the appeal says
The National's piece by Martin Hannan says the company is working on a "documentary-drama" about the Cannock Chase creature. The article's main voice is Damon Simms, 42, a paranormal investigator and newspaper columnist who works as an operations manager for a security firm, and whom it says the film company approached. He told the Sentinel he considers the werewolf "rather like a fantastic cash cow" and "Staffordshire's Nessie."
According to the paper, Simms says "many creditable people" have claimed to see the creature, among them "rangers, an ex-police officer" and a friend who is a civil surveyor. He also says the creature's reported sightings tend to coincide with a "spate of UFO sightings" on the Chase. The newspaper dates the creature's story to about 1975.
What the reports describe
The National repeats details from the Sentinel: three teenagers who saw an "upright wolf" searching a rubbish bin, and a dog walker who fled after hearing a howl and seeing "monstrous yellow eyes." The Sentinel, it adds, said most of the sightings centered on the German War Cemetery in the area. It also quotes the West Midlands Ghost Club, which says it first looked into the creature in 2009, on an account from two motorcyclists who saw "an enormous dog" by the road, which ran away and "bizarrely" leapt up onto "two hind legs."
The Sentinel adds a claim that "of all the official werewolf sightings in the UK – that is, reported to the police – the overwhelming majority of them are at Cannock Chase." No figure, police source or dataset is given, and we could not locate one.
What is missing
The National's own columnist is blunt: "no one has yet come forward with any film or photographic evidence of a werewolf in Cannock Chase or anywhere else in Britain." The article's tone is wry, and it treats the Nessie comparison as a local boast. It also notes that this werewolf "doesn't need a full moon to start howling" and has been "spotted" in daylight, and that the Chase is reportedly haunted as well by "black-eyed Satanic children" and a "Lady of the Chase," which places the werewolf among a crowd of local legends.
We did not find the Stoke Sentinel's original appeal, so we rely on The National's summary of it. The accounts it lists are anecdotes, undated in the piece, and the investigator's UFO link is his own observation.
Earlier Monstrum coverage of the Chase is in The Cannock Chase Werewolf.
Bottom line
Per The National, Eleven Films appealed in December 2016, through the Stoke Sentinel, for witnesses to a Cannock Chase werewolf for a documentary-drama. The reports quoted are undated anecdotes. No photograph or film is cited, and the claim that the Chase holds "the overwhelming majority" of police-reported UK werewolf sightings has no published source.
