As the pandemic closed doors in Chiapas, another fear was moving through Coita.

Radio Ambulante’s October 27, 2020 report, “Luna llena sobre Chiapas,” follows a werewolf scare that drew residents into the streets that April. Earlier rumors had come from nearby Ocuilapa. Local page administrator José María Rincón initially tried to discover what people were talking about; a livestream intended to settle nerves instead filled with accounts of strange sounds and shapes.

The reporting describes armed searches, claimed traces and competing explanations. It also places the stories beside regional nahual traditions, with anthropologist Andrés Fábregas explaining a cultural framework richer than a simple translation into the English word werewolf. No captured creature or clear identifying image settles the account.

The episode’s power comes from listening to the people inside the scare. A community telling frightening stories about itself can be frightened in earnest. That does not make every report accurate, but it makes the experience more complicated than a joke about an easily fooled town.

The hunt also changes the landscape. A route someone used yesterday becomes a route another person warns them away from. A sound that once belonged to an animal waits for a more alarming name. Coita’s case lives in that movement between an uncertain stimulus, a circulating explanation and the uneasy behavior that follows.

The reporters leave more than one interpretation in play. The episode preserves a town’s search and the traditions it drew upon, without turning its questions into a specimen.
