The manor is still standing. The village has begun to understand that something is wrong.
That is the territory of Sean Ellis’s period horror, introduced in the official 2021 Sundance program as Eight for Silver. The festival describes a late-nineteenth-century country village, an apparent wild-animal attack and an investigator discovering a threat that reaches the manor as well as the townspeople. Ellis is credited as director and screenwriter; Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly and Alistair Petrie lead the listed cast.
The film’s path out of Sundance brought a different name. Angel Melanson’s January 27, 2022 report for Fangoria announces The Cursed for a February 18 theatrical release through LD Entertainment. It identifies the investigator as pathologist John McBride and frames the film as a reworking of werewolf lore.
What changed after Sundance
Ellis described changes between festival and theatrical versions: an updated score by Lorne Balfe, revised computer effects and the return of more original in-camera effects. His account makes the interval between the two titles part of the film’s making, rather than simply a change on the poster.
The premise offers a particular kind of dread. A pathologist is trained to read a body for an explanation; a village can have reasons to conceal the history around it. Bringing that investigator into an older, uneasy community puts physical evidence beside stories people may prefer to leave unspoken.
A werewolf mystery can be intimate enough to fit inside one changing body. This one’s announced setting opens the question outward, toward a whole place waiting to learn what has hold of it.
