Amarillo Zoo’s Mystery Figure: The 2022 UAO Photograph
A strange figure appeared beyond Amarillo Zoo’s fence. The city released one photograph in June 2022 and invited the public to explain it.

The animal was outside the zoo. The mystery was already inside everyone’s imagination.
A camera at Amarillo Zoo recorded a strange figure around 1:25 a.m. on May 21, 2022. On June 8, the city gave it a name spacious enough for almost any explanation: UAO, the Unidentified Amarillo Object.
Amarillo’s own announcement describes cameras inside a perimeter fence capturing the figure outside. Officials floated an unusually dressed pedestrian, a coyote on its hind legs and a chupacabra as possibilities. They also said video footage was unavailable. The public had a still image to argue over, rather than a sequence showing how the shape moved.
KFDA’s local reporting includes parks director Michael Kashuba’s assurance that the photograph was real. Authenticity of an image and identification of its subject are separate questions. A camera can faithfully record something its viewers struggle to recognize.
The city reported no attempted entry, harm, criminal activity or vandalism. It presented the puzzle as an invitation to curiosity. There was no official declaration of a werewolf roaming Amarillo.
That leaves the frame’s peculiar strength intact. Its provenance is much clearer than the anonymous monster photographs that circulate without a place or date, while the figure itself remains hard to read. A trustworthy timestamp cannot tell us what a blurred outline is made of.
For the moment documented by the June announcement, the fence marked two boundaries: the zoo’s perimeter, and the point where a photograph stopped supplying answers.
