Iguatemi’s Werewolf Scare: The Figure in the Unfinished House

There was something in the doorway of the unfinished house. The student saw it, and ran.
In Campo Grande News’s February 21, 2017 report, a young man returning from school described an approximately 1.8-metre figure with large, pale eyes. He said it walked upright. Yet he did not accept the name his town was giving it: lobisomem.
The setting was Iguatemi, in Mato Grosso do Sul, near Brazil’s border with Paraguay. Another resident described a large, long-faced animal passing beside the passenger door of her car. Her husband, driving, had not seen it. She remembered her grandmother’s tales of enormous dogs, while stopping short of calling her own glimpse a werewolf.
That hesitation sits at the heart of the account. People could be frightened by what they thought they had seen without agreeing that it belonged to a legend.
The search found no animal
Jornal da Nova’s contemporary report describes a military-police call in the Jardim Valoszek Konrad neighborhood around the turn from February 20 to 21. Residents told police a strange animal had crossed the area, struck a passing vehicle and disappeared into vegetation. When officers arrived, they found people carrying wood and a sickle. A search produced no creature.
The paper attributes its account to the occurrence report. That is evidence that residents made a complaint and officers searched, rather than police confirmation of a werewolf.
Campo Grande News also reported claims of tracks in the unpaved streets. No identified track analysis appears in its story. The doorway description, the passenger’s glimpse and the search remain different parts of one neighborhood scare, with different limits.
The unfinished house gives the story its sharpest edge: an ordinary street, an open doorway, and a familiar outline suddenly refusing to look familiar. The search ended. The name had already escaped.
