News report Remote pond, Onondaga County, near Syracuse, New York (exact pond withheld)
The Syracuse Figure: Mini-Bigfoot in an Onondaga Swamp, or a Skinny-Dipper?
A hiker's phone shots of a 4-foot-9 swamp wader split the BFRO: mini-Bigfoot or an old man in an Onondaga pond? The photos are public; the identification isn't. Filed as unresolved.

Alleged photos: Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, at a remote pond in Onondaga County, New York. Public coverage: BFRO Report #82485 and a national recap by Fox News / OutKick dated Aug. 31, 2026. This is a summary of those records, not on-scene reporting.
It looks, at first glance, like an old man wading a pond with no clothes and no shame.
Look again. That is what the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization wants you to do.
In early August 2026, a hiker in Onondaga County — the county that holds Syracuse, New York — photographed a figure in a remote glacial pond. BFRO founder Matthew Moneymaker later dubbed it the Syracuse Figure. He put the height at about 4 foot 9. He said it does not look like a classic Bigfoot. He also said it does not look like a normal human.
Fox News / OutKick ran the fork-in-the-road headline on August 31: Bigfoot, or an elderly skinny-dipper?
Monstrum Athenaeum has not independently verified the photos, the pond, or the witness. We read the public BFRO report and the OutKick recap. The ambiguity is the story. Anyone who tells you they have closed it from a cropped still is lying to you or to themselves.
Monday, August 10. A day off. A pond. A snap.
According to BFRO Report #82485, the photographer is a woman in her fifties identified only as K.D. She has lived in central upstate New York for 25 years. Monday, August 10, 2026, was her day off. She picked a remote glacial pond and bog in Onondaga County. She arrived around 1 p.m. The lot, she says, was empty.
She walked the path, shot scenery, then looked left and realized something was wading the pond. She was, in her words, "instantly unnerved." She snapped a couple of photos. The figure, she says, snapped its head around and looked right at her in a way that got her more creeped out, so she turned and left.
On the way out she passed a family of three coming in. None of them matched. She later took a second path closer to the water. A sign said no swimming or wading. Nobody was there. She followed a shoreline path a short way, got a "really creepy feeling," and went home.
Only at home, looking at the pictures, did the "person" start looking inhuman to her. A friend saw the shots, thought Bigfoot, and sent them to researchers.
What the BFRO says it did next
Investigator Benjamin C. — central New York for the organization — met K.D. at the site six days later. He calls her credible. He calls the pictures compelling. The BFRO is sitting on the exact pond name on purpose. If this is a man, they want that man to identify himself by knowing the spot. Attention-seekers will not.
Ben waded in. Waist-deep mud pockets. Submerged trees. Plant roots. About 26 inches of water a foot off the bank. It took him roughly ten minutes to cover a few hundred feet. He is six feet tall and athletic. He got scratched on the land route. His point: an elderly naked man doing this for fun is a hell of a hobby.
He lined up K.D.'s phone on a tripod at the same height and angle and stood where she said the figure stood. Using his own height and an 11-inch tree in frame, he put the figure at about 4 feet 9 inches.
Then he did the statistics bit. A 57-inch adult male, he argues, sits far below the global mean male height — on the order of fewer than 1 in 20,000 adult men. Rare is not impossible. Rare plus a muck pond with a no-swimming sign plus no car in the lot is the stack they want you to feel.
Moneymaker will not pick a horse
Moneymaker's notes on the same report are the reason this thing has a nickname.
He says he might have killed one or more theories if he had walked the site himself, so he defers to Ben on the ground. He also says what looks like skin may be thinning wet fur laid flat. He notes the faces are cropped blowups from a half-zoom phone shot — distortion is guaranteed.
He named it the Syracuse Figure because Syracuse means marshland, and because whatever this is, he suspects it spends a lot of time in marsh. Classic Bigfoot reports, he argues, include wading sloughs and flooded woods more often than the public remembers.
OutKick quoted him saying the location and the behavior — wading a swamp — are "more consistent with bigfoots than humans." He also said they are posting the photos in hopes someone in or near Onondaga County recognizes the man, if it is a man.
That is not a slam dunk. That is a researcher covering both exits.
Mini-squatch, dwarf adult, or just a guy?
Ben floats a juvenile. He also floats, more carefully, an adult of an unknown hominoid with a height problem — he even cites an older Idaho report of a "dwarf" female under five feet. He says a juvenile is statistically the cleaner bet if you have already bought the species.
If you have not bought the species, you are looking at a short, pale, possibly nude figure in a pond that is a pain to reach, photographed by a nearsighted hiker who uses her phone to see things she cannot resolve with her eyes. She never saw it leave. She never smelled anything odd. Wind was blowing toward her from the figure.
Why we are not calling it
The photos are the rare thing this beat usually lacks: stills the organization is willing to put in public, from a witness they spent a day with, with a scale recreation on site.
They are also stills of a small figure a football field away, blown up, in a county full of people. An old man with an unusual body, a person with dwarfism, a prank, a distorted crop — all still on the table. The BFRO has not identified the figure. Fox framed the same fork. So do we.
Do not go hunting the pond. They hid the pin for a reason, and trespass is still trespass. If you recognize a neighbor who skinny-dips glacial bogs on Mondays, the BFRO asked you to say so. That is their investigation, not a safari invite.
Bottom line
A credible-sounding Onondaga hiker shot something 4-foot-9 in a remote swamp at 1 p.m. on August 10, 2026. The BFRO's man on the ground does not think it is human. The BFRO's founder will not rule out a wet, weird man. OutKick asked the country to pick a side.
We are not picking. We are filing the Syracuse Figure as unresolved — the most honest label a 4'9" swamp wader can wear until someone puts a name on it or a better frame lands.
Read BFRO #82485. Look at the comparison shots they posted. Then tell us it was easy.
