The great outdoors holds adventure, natural beauty and attracts millions of people every year to explore and marvel. This holds true, no matter where you go in the world. From the rain forests of Brazil to the grassy, desert plains of Africa, and all points in between; people are attracted to seeking out the majestic beauty that is our world. Another thing that holds true is the intrinsic feeling that we are not alone. The belief that something, lurking in the overgrown, brushy areas of the forest, just behind the trees, is… real and should be respected, if not feared. For some people, that something may be werewolves, vampires or ghosts, but for others, that something is Sasquatch. It’s a legend that knows no borders and transcends generations, dating back hundreds of years. While it is called by many different names, it typically invokes a sense of mysterious curiosity in everyone; whether a believer or a naysayer.
On April 1, 2014, four tourists decided to visit a natural monument park in Holland known as Posbank. They chatted idly as they walked along the gravel trail, with the intent of visiting a watch tower used by the forest rangers. Upon reaching the gated stairway of the tower, they were greeted by a sign informing them the structure was closed due to vandalism. They continued to explore the area which, interestingly, still held randomly placed World War 2 era grave stones that dotted the tree line. As they talked amongst themselves, a loud knocking sound began to echo throughout the forest. It was sudden, loud and constant; giving a jolt of fear to the tourists as they looked about.
Searching for the origination of the noise, their video camera panned around and zoomed into the forest. Suddenly, a figure emerged from behind a tree and stared at the group as they looked on in bewilderment. The confused tourists can be heard asking themselves “What is it? What could it be?” on the video. After a few seconds, one of the tourists called out to the figure, “Hey!” Suddenly, it disappeared behind the tree and the extremely loud knocking sound began echoing through the forest, again. The group fled the scene in fear; clearly uncertain if the unknown figure meant them harm or not. A closer look at the video footage shows a distinct, albeit shadowy, face and shoulders of the unknown figure as it peers out from behind the tree.
The question remains: What was it that these tourists witnessed? While the video is not clear, the general circumstances of the encounter closely matches the general descriptions of Sasquatch encounters around the world, leading some to conclude that it was just that; Sasquatch. Proponents arguing that the figure is the furry beast cite the height on the tree, from which the head and shoulders of this figure appeared, would place it at around seven to eight feet tall. They also argue that the tree knocking, which intensified as the group investigated, is a tell-tale warning initiated by Sasquatch(s) to encourage invaders to flee the area or else.
This video goes to show that is doesn’t matter where in the world we live, Sasquatch stories exist and are still popular elements in our culture. Could this simple fact alone be proof that there is more than meets the eye to some legends? We believe so.
