Eight-Year-Old Reports Jackalope Sighting in Wisconsin

Naturally imaginative, kids don’t make the best witnesses. From Santa to the Tooth Fairy, they believe in just about everything so when a child says “I see something strange,” most adults chalk it up to their imagination.

We caught wind of a recent report, posted on Cryptozoology.com, where an eight-year-old child claims to have encountered a ‘horned rabbit-like creature’. Perhaps more than an active imagination, details of this sighting are specific enough to warrant a closer look.

Only known as Clark to protect his identity due to his age, the boy was at his home in Winnebago County, looking out of the window when he spotted the strange creature. Watching for birds, he saw something hop across the hill before vanishing into the grass.

The sighting took place last summer, and Clark said the creature looked like a rabbit, gray in color with shorter ears. That’s where the similarities with Peter Cottontale ended. He claims this “rabbit” had stubby horns, bright yellow eyes, and tusks.

Sightings of giant, horned rabbits aren’t the most common among cryptids. However there have been reports in the past of similarly described, although smaller, horned creatures – the jackalope.

According to Wired.com, US based interest into the jackalope phenomenon started in Wyoming in 1932 when Douglas Herrick mounted deer antlers onto a rabbit’s head and placed it on his wall. While Herrick’s creation was a hoax, rabbits with horns have appeared in natural history works dating to the 1650s.
